Updates from the Field National IPY Youth Steering Committees exist in a number of countries around the world and work to run national-level IPY programs for youth and to involve as many youth world-wide in IPY as possible. Please check out our National YSC's page for more information. If your country is currently not represented and you would be interested in starting a national YSC please contact us. Download our start-up guide here (32 kb) Updated APECS site launched The Association of Early Career Scientists, a branch of the YSC, has just launched their updated, new-and-improved website. If you want to get involved in International Polar Year right from the start now is your chance!! The YSC is asking youth from around the world to write to their political leaders (and send a copy to us) about their concerns for the Polar Regions and what they personally are doing to make a difference (biking to school, recycling, starting a polar club in their school, doing a polar science project). The YSC will present these letters at the official launch of IPY in Paris on March 1st and on our website. Throughout the Polar Year we will follow up with youth to see how they are coming on their commitments. For more information check out the attached pdf. (250kb) Et voici la même information en Français. Scott Base celebrates its 50th birthday! This was an exciting weekend for those at the New Zealand base in Antarctica. Fifty years ago Scott Base was being built by a team led by Sir Edmund Hillary to accommodate New Zealand’s participation in the International Geophysical Year (IGY, the predecessor of the IPY) and the Trans Antarctic Expedition. The success of the IGY led to the recognition of the ongoing value of Scott Base and its maintenance as New Zealand’s place on the ice. Sir Ed returned to Scott Base last weekend with New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clarke to celebrate the last fifty years and the upcoming IPY.
